| Mayor Parker and Council President Johnson, PLEASE urge the Streets Department to fast track the implementation of their South St bridge safety improvement project and, if necessary, help find an expedient funding mechanism. On Sept 9, Abby Gilmore was run over by a SEPTA bus while she was riding in the South St bridge bike lane. Abby was hit where the bike lane is crossed by a vehicle turning lane (called a "mixing zone"). Abby is stable, but her legs are seriously injured and she has a long road to recovery. The City has been aware of the dangers posed by this bike lane for some time. A statement released after this crash stated that Streets had been "actively designing safety improvements for the east side of the South Street Bridge." Safety improvements should include: - Remove the mixing zone by adding a bike signal and keep bike lane along curb - Placing no-drill jersey barriers would protect the bike lane. Nearly 500 people commute across the bridge per hour during peak times. Many of them are students and health care professionals. Crashes and near-misses are frequent.
