3rd Street Bike Lane

In 2024, Philly Bike Action saw potential for a separated bike lane on South 3rd street and went to work making it a reality.

  • March 25th, 2024 - Philly Bike Action and Queen Village Neighbors Association (QVNA) host a joint community meeting to discuss street safety. PBA Organizer and QVNA Board Member Amanda Mazie presents a design idea for a bike lane on S 3rd Street from South to Market. The meeting was attended by CM Mark Squilla, who saw the wide spread community support for a 3rd street bike lane.
  • Summer 2024 - Old City Business District, QVNA, and Society Hill Civic Association (SHCA) send letters of support/non-opposition to CM Squilla about a bike lane on 3rd St.

  • September 2024 - CM Squilla introduces a the bill to authorize the creation of a bike lane on 3rd street from South to Market. PBA turns out supporters to comment at City Council meetings and the bill is passed.

  • Winter 2025 - SHCA sends a survey to residents asking about protected bike lanes. 55% say they support protected bike lanes on Spruce, Pine, and 3rd.

  • March 6th, 2025 - The City holds an open house about the 3rd street bike lane. 280 people attend. CBS reports. The City releases a traffic study saying removing a lane won't have adverse traffic impacts.

    In response to a small but vocal group of opposition, PBA launches a petition, which gets 996 total signatures, including 444 in City Council District 1.

  • July 2025 - Street department holds hearing on the proposed curb regulations changes needed for the 3rd street bike lane. Supporters of the bike lane outnumber opponents 2 to 1. City eventually issues a report saying they will make the curb regulation changes.

  • May 2026 - The flex-post separated bike lane from South to Market is finally installed along with supplementary loading zones! 50 people email CM Squilla thank you! CBS reports.
