A City Hall bike lane is possible if we act fast!

Imagine being able to ride around City Hall without fighting 4 lanes of traffic! This dream could be a reality, but we need your help right now!

PennDOT is repaving the streets around City Hall this summer, and the city’s Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems (OTIS) will consider bike lane improvements, but it needs an ordinance from 5th District Councilmember Jeffery Young Jr. Logan Square Neighbors Association has supplied a letter to the Councilman’s office, but this rare opportunity is only possible if CM Young introduces legislation by June 12th, before Council breaks for the whole summer.

A bike lane on Penn Square would:

  • Provide a dedicated space for cycling around City Hall, improving safety for cyclists across the whole city.
  • Reduce crossing distances for people walking and in wheelchairs.
  • Serve as both a practical and a symbolic representation of bike safety in Philadelphia

Tell Councilmember Young to introduce this bill by June 12th so we don’t lose this opportunity. Time is running out!

That’s why we need you to sign our petition and send an email to Councilmember Young ASAP. Share it with friends, family, neighbors, and anyone else who cares about bike safety.

"Please don’t pass up this opportunity to make this a safer, world class city. This will make life better for drivers and people on bicycles. I experienced an altercation with a very angry motorist when I was leaving city hall trying to get onto the small existing bicycle lane between JFK and market. She yelled at me to “STAY IN YOUR LANE!” But the irony of it is that I would have loved to stay in my lane— there just wasn’t one for the majority of the city hall stretch! Please— people bicycling for transportation deserve space too. Don’t turn down this opportunity please!!!!"

"As a professor at Temple, and program head for our City Planning and Community Development degrees, I want to strongly encourage you to introduce the appropriate legislation to create a bicycle lane around City Hall. It would add a vital piece to our transportation network by improving safety for riders, pedestrians, and drivers - and help the City achieve its Vision Zero goals. Increasing active transportation options will improve public health for all residents, especially those in your district who will most directly benefit."

"I cycle frequently along 15th St to S Broad St, and the current bike lanes are treacherous and do not connect to each other. Please introduce a bill for a new and better plan!"

"Biking around city hall is 3rd world pathetic. Please do your job."

"I bike everywhere in the city with my 5yr old daughter, but often fear for our safety. Even as a driver, I'd much prefer bikes have their own space. Every effort helps everyone."

-Brian C. 2 weeks ago

"I do not drive, so biking is how I get around the city. When I'm on my bike, that's one less car on the street causing congestion. Bike lanes are narrower than car lanes! The city hall bike lane is crucial for me to safely navigate the city."

"A bike lane at city hall would demonstrate this cities dedication to protecting Philadelphians and the lovely people who visit our beautiful city!"

"Do it please."

"More people would bike if there were more bike lanes. Please make it safer for everyone including those of us who already do! A cyclist was just smashed by a cop car speeding last week. We are not asking for a lot, just a little strip of asphalt with some bollards to keep the crazy folk away from hitting us!"

-Noah L. 2 weeks ago

"Philly needs more SAFE places to cycle and there are so many non continuous routes. A route around city hall would be a great lynch pin to the whole network."

"A bike lane around city hall would be a great way to connect other facilities in the area like 15th Street, Market Street, and JFK. I've been happy with the improvements the city has been making - let's not miss this opportunity while the road is being resurfaced!"

"Please help save us from people operating 2000 lbs. of steel who always travel above the speed limit fueled by anger while texting! At present, nothing is done (no enforcement, no rules) to curtail the effects of drivers' anger, entitlement, and sheer power compared to other road users. Using active transportation to fight climate change, pollution, and poor health shouldn't mean having to take your life in your hands."

"Please build the city hall bike lanes. It’s not safe to bike in the street currently nor for pedestrians or people in wheelchairs to cross. Studies show that bike infrastructure makes streets safer for ALL road users, including motorists. It’s time for Philly to catch up with its neighboring cities, DC and NYC, on bike lanes! Let’s go!"

"I am a Philadelphian and I ride my bike to work on Market and 11th st- this bike lane is important to protect the lives of cyclists and would highlight the commitment the city has to safe transportation to Philadelphians and tourists alike. Do the right thing, please add a protected bike lane"

"Several times I have used the Indego station at City Hall, especially when the trolleys are running on diversion. The biggest physical and mental barrier to biking from here is navigating the road around City Hall. A bike lane would make this significantly easier and incentivize me to bike more."

It would mean a lot to see the city dedicate resources to keeping cars 2nd in line of priority behind PEOPLE."

-Lewis F. 2 weeks, 1 day ago

"Whenever I go around city hall on a bike, it feels unsafe, due the the multiple unprotected lane changes which you have to be able to manage. Repaving around city hall without incorporating a functional bike lane would be a missed opportunity"

-Max K. 2 weeks, 1 day ago

"It's almost impossible to get around City Hall from the west side of Market to the east side. There is plenty of room to add a bike lane. There was a bike lane added to Market Street west and it just dead ends into City Hall, you have to continue around with traffic merging into you. Very dangerous and I avoid."

"What better way to display the city’s commitment to bike infrastructure than making city hall and surrounds safely bike accessible! I also bike to Jury Duty every year and this would be a huge help. Please consider!"

-Julie C. 2 weeks, 1 day ago

"Safer biking infrastructure helps protect Philadelphians who cannot afford cars. At a time when SEPTA is facing service cuts it’s important to bolster the other main non-car transit option. I ride a bike to get around, not “just” for exercise, and biking around City Hall is currently pretty scary. A well-considered bike lane could really improve the safety of the area."

-Jenna S. 2 weeks, 1 day ago

"The bikers need protection in a densely trafficked area around city hall. Not only will this provide the protection, but also alleviate issues around street riders causing disruption with car traffic flow"

-John Paul C. 2 weeks, 1 day ago

"This road is unsafe for all road users. Recently a driver lost their leg to an act of traffic violence. I'm asking Council Member Young to do his part to make City Hall safer by introducing an ordinance to build a protected bike lane around the center of our city. This is common sense and would be an huge missed opportunity."

-Nicole B. 2 weeks, 1 day ago

"My husband and I bike every day to get around Philadelphia. I love this city but I fear for our lives every single day. I'm a colleague of Dr. Friedes who was murdered riding her bike last year. I am begging you to make this city safer for us, and greener as a bonus."

-Emma G. 2 weeks, 1 day ago

"There are currently two fully protected bike lanes on the west side of city hall that abruptly start/end. There are also two bike/bus lanes on the east side of city hall that abruptly start/end. There is already a bike lane that goes 1/4 of the way around city hall. Connecting the last few hundred feet of these bike routes is just common sense. Imagine a high way that abruptly turns into a dirt road for a few hundred feet. That kind of dangerously disconnected infrastructure would never be accepted for other modes of travel. It is very exciting that we finally have the chance to fill this key gap."

-Ian W. 2 weeks, 1 day ago

"Philadelphia needs more bike safety, road resurfacings are not a opportunity we can afford to miss in order to protect residents and make this city more equitable to all road users."

"I work in real estate project management on projects all over the region- large and small. Bike lanes make our city more livable, accessible, and affordable for all residents and contribute to a higher quality of life for everyone. We definitely should have a bike lane around city hall for that busy location- it would attract the right type of slow mix pedestrian and bike traffic that creates a safer, quieter, cleaner, higher quality urban environment. Thank you!"

"Cyclists safety is important as we want to encourage more cycling and fewer cars."

-Sandra F. 2 weeks, 1 day ago

"I have been a cyclist my entire adult life. I've biked all over the country and around Europe. I have always felt safe bicycling on roads in many place, but I do not feel safe in Philadelphia. Bike lanes stop and start. Some motorists would wipe you off the road if they could. We need safe, clearly marked, consistent bike lanes throughout the city, but especially around City Hall, which is scary enough in a car, but on a bike is a nightmare! If we have more and better bike lanes, more people will leave their cars at home. Let's make Philadelphia a model city for cyclists! Thank you for your attention to this important matter."

"More bike lanes and public transport."

-ROBERT M. 2 weeks, 1 day ago

"We must protect our residents! Literally every biker I know has been hit by a car in this city. In all sincerity, this is something I always ask people who bike regularly because I’m terrified to ride a bike in this city. Even if defensive at first, upon reflection each person has admitted their experience of being either doored by a parked car, or had their back tire clipped by a moving vehicle or worse. Those who oppose bike lane safety in favor of increased loading zones/street parking for motor vehicles in center city need to be shown a clear message. That the City of Philadelphia cares more about protecting the lives of its residents than it does about the availability of downtown parking. People’s lives are more important than parking. There could be no more obvious statement."

-Jonathan L. 2 weeks, 2 days ago

"Bike lanes are a necessity to not only ensure the bikers remain safe, but the drivers as well. We saw the tragic event of the drunk driver who killed the pediatric oncologist last year, and if the bike lanes were more reinforced this tragedy may have never happened. Biking and use of public transportation reduces traffic and congestion in the city which not only benefits the environment but reduces accidents. We have all seen how the drivers operate their vehicles around city hall; aggressively crossing lanes, almost hitting pedestrians, and creating traffic as they block many lanes just so they can get into the one they need to. Not only do we need bike lane reform but we need transportation regulation around city hall as it poses a danger to all. Installing bike lanes will not only provide safety for all commuters, but it will encourage others to use public transportation. The more people we have using public transportation the more revenue it generates for the city we all love. Install bike lanes around city hall and contribute to a better and safer city for all."

"Riding, and even walking, around City Hall is dangerous. multi-lane roads merge and existing painted bike lanes begin and end with little notice. now is an opportunity to begin to make an iconic and historic part of Philadelphia more accessible for cyclists. Reduce the amount of single occupancy vehicle traffic lanes and add bike lanes, widen sidewalks, and allocate transit specific lanes to make the area easier to navigate and more desirable for citizens and tourists alike."

Many of the drivers on Penn square are flying by the seat of their pants to reach the highway, or they are pedal to the metal after just getting off 676. "Councilmember Young, I deeply implore you to introduce legislation for this bike lane. For such a central and busy part of our city, the area around City Hall is quite dangerous as a pedestrian and cyclist. To get home from Market East on my bike, either I have to ride on the road through busy traffic, or ride near pedestrians walking at City Hall. This setup is dangerous for everyone involved! Make it safe, for everyone :)"

"The streets around city hall are a nightmare to navigate for people walking and on bikes. Adding a bike lane here will calm traffic, reduce distances for people walking, and be a major step forward for bike safety in Center City."

"We need bike lanes and improved pedestrian infrastructure around city hall! This is the heart of our city and should represent our dedication to creating a safer, greener city for all Philadelphians and visitors. People navigating this space outside of motor vehicles deserve space and protection. If the city is really dedicated to reducing traffic deaths to zero this project feels like a no-brainer. It should be the default that anytime there is work is done on the streets of our city, the opportunity is used to being the safety of the street up to modern safety standards for all road users."

-Matthew C. 2 weeks, 3 days ago

"Build the bike lanes! The traffic circle around city hall makes the center of philadelphia feel more like an island in a sea of traffic. I KNOW this isn't just me- I doubt there's anyone that has a pleasant experience navigating the four lanes of traffic there, whether it's walking, biking, in a wheelchair, or in a car. Personally, I dread even having to drive there because the traffic is always terrible and the lanes are confusing- I've had people cut me off too many times to count (in dangerous and scary ways). Adding a protected bike lane here - with the additional required "daylighting" wouldn't just protect bikers- it could help soothe the confusion of driving, walking, and existing around city hall. Let's take back the land here and return it to a public space over a glorified roundabout."

"Council Member Young Jr., Request your Office draft an ordinance for Council approval before summer recess. Adding a complete bicycle lane circuit around Penn Square would unite bicycle lanes on Market, JFK, etc., and send a message that Philadelphia is a sanctuary for all travel modalities. Even more pressing, is the need for meaningful enforcement by Philadelphia Police and Parking Authority Officers of the existing, unprotected bicycle lanes. New loading zone signs very recently went up along Spruce street. However, this morning, PPA customer service stated that they were instructed not to enforce Spruce & Pine, from Front to 22nd, today, June 6 through Sunday, June 8th, with no explanation provided. This was confirmed by the 911 dispatcher, when I called to report a vehicle obstructing a bicycle lane, fire hydrant, and accessible curb cutout ramp at Spruce & Medley."

-Paul H. 2 weeks, 6 days ago

"Yes, this is long but I've lived in Philly for 20 years trying to ride a bike and stay alive. That makes for a lot of frustration! So,PLEASE just this once do NOT let the fossil-fuel spewing car-people tell you what to do, making Philly more of an autocentric city still stuck in the 20th century. I ride the Pine St/Spruce St lanes every day & have been almost hit by drivers that think that since I'm on a bike I shouldn't be in the street when I was pushed into the street by cars/trucks illegally parked in the bike lanes. Was so excited when I heard bollards would be installed! Bollards that cyclists have been promised by the city since the Kenny dministration BTW. Now, of course, some neighborhood association is protesting because they're too lazy to park their cars a few steps from their residence & walk the groceries or whatever to their house. What is wrong with these people? Notice: Get a cart, put it in your trunk, park your car wherever you find a space, WALK your cart back to your house & put it inside. Then WALK back to your car & park it in your usual spot. Easy peasey. Also for the people who,ILLEGALLY park in the street in front of someone's house to unload, instead of ILLEGALLY parking in the bike lane. Both options are illegal; why do they want bike lanes available over the street? What is wrong with THESE people? Might it be that they experience little or no consequences for breaking the law? Or that can simply tell city hall NO!and that's it? Is it because our 20th century, autocentric city jumps when they say jump? Put the damned bike lanes around city hall. STOP being led around by the nose by these bullies! JUST SAY YES, WE ARE DOING IT for the good of our city."

This will also make Philadelphia even more welcoming for next year’s celebrations of the World Cup and the 250th anniversary of our founding. Please take action to make the area around city hall even more welcoming and complement the improvements at Dilworth and Love Parks by making the area even more accessible and usable to pedestrians and cyclists. "I bike to work from West Philadelphia. The Chestnut street shared lane is too dangerous to be useful. I use the lovely new market street bike lane which ends dangerously as I’m fighting for my right to use the road around city hall. Once I get around city hall (only a few more blocks to safety!) I’m still weaving in and out of angry drivers since many vehicles that are not busses or bicycles parking in the shared bus/bike lane. I don’t want to die on my way to work."

"As a frequent city biker, I see the current integration from Market West’s bike lane to the street around City Hall as helpful but inadequate, leaving bikers with a confusing dead end or a shunt to the inner shoulder. This bike lane proposal would make the existing practice of bikers concrete, lessening confusion for drivers and any unwanted biking through Dilworth Park (as is the park policy) and increasing safety for everyone."

-Ben K. 2 weeks, 6 days ago

"I bike as my primary mode of transit around the city and a safe and protected route around the city hall area would make my commute so much easier, and I wouldn’t be tempted at all to ride in the no-bike zone of the actual city hall grounds just to avoid getting hit by the cars which speed around the corners."

"PennDOT is repaving the streets around City Hall this summer, and OTIS will consider adding safe bike infrastructure to the inner loop of the traffic circle—but they need supporting legislation from City Council, specifically Councilmember Jeffery Young, Jr. (District 5) The City Hall bike lane would be the keystone of Philly’s bike network—connecting to existing lanes on W Market St, JFK Blvd, 15th St, and a bus–bike lane on E Market, and future lanes on Broad Street and others! City Council must introduce legislation for a bike lane quickly—or else we’ll miss our chance for a safer Penn Square for years to come. "Bicycle infrastructure costs little to maintain and delivers robust ongoing economic benefits—perhaps most importantly to those striving to realize their own potential, unburdened by a personal car’s depreciating value. A bike lane around City Hall is a critically important safety improvement, but also a symbol of who Philadelphia is for: are we a playground for the already well off? Or a springboard for the aspirational—giving students, parents, entrepreneurs, and everyday workers a fast, affordable path to opportunity?"

Thank you for sponsoring this legislation and making the city safer and better for multi-modal transportation."

"Almost got hit by a car in front of City Hall last week immediately after my first day of orientation as a new PennMed nurse (coming from 1500 Market St) because of the insane traffic pattern in front of the center of our city & how lethal it is for bicyclists. Please fix to save our lives!"

-Gleb B. 3 weeks ago

"I get around Philadelphia mainly by walking and/or bicycling. Having been unemployed for the better part of the last forty-three (43) years (not a choice I have made) SEPTA is a luxury for me. Being on the streets, either as a pedestrian, bicyclist, or motorist is dangerous these days. People run stop signs, blow through red lights, do not use turn signals, and commit other offenses while driving. This has become more prevalent since the enactment of that law a few years ago whereby the Philadelphia Police are no longer allowed or required to stop motorists for broken headlights, taillights, and six other reasons. Anything that makes walking and/or cycling safer is welcomed by yours truly!"

"As the central landmark of Philadelphia, City Hall represents a cultural, civic, and historical destination for residents and visitors alike. In its current state, the built environment makes navigating the surrounding area hostile for anyone outside of a motor vehicle. Which is not ideal - I dont like being on a collision course with pedestrians, even though I go extremely slow. Please complete the bike network so we can all stay safe."

-Ashlei T. 3 weeks ago

"Dear Councilperson Young, Beyond useful noise pollution reduction (desirable in its own right) and air pollution around Dillworth Park, a bike lane around City Hall would deliver obvious proof to visitors in 2026 and beyond of Philadelphia's dedication and concern for the safety of Philadelphia's cyclists, pedestrians (especially the very young, old, and disabled) attempting to cross those four lanes onto that island. Please do not let this opportunity go to waste."

"It is time to provide cyclists with a safe way to navigate the city hall area."

-Peter H. 3 weeks ago

"Bicycling around city hall is third- world esque. The market Street and parkway bike Lanes unceremoniously dump you around Penn square where you have to dart from the left to the right. On the south side the lane disappears all together forcing you to ride in traffic or ride along the skirt. It's pathetic"

-Chris A. 3 weeks ago

"Please push for real, effective bike and pedestrian bike infrastructure around City Hall! I actively avoid biking around there even if it's the most direct route because navigating vehicular traffic is very stressful. -Sean B. 3 weeks ago

"Dear Council Member Young: For more than 20 years, I have led bike rides through Center City Philadelphia, for both residents and visitors. The City Hall traffic circle is for bike riders what a series of rapids are for canoe paddlers. Often, we'd just dismount and have to walk around this vortex of cars, even though there was plenty of space in the wide streets. Many visitors asked me if there was going to be any protection for cyclists and I would always say, "They are working on it..." because I am a lifelong Philadelphian and an optimist about these things. PLEASE INTRODUCE this bill, which will help bring more safety, more beauty, more fun to our city – at very little cost. City Hall is an architectural wonder, and this bike lane will help us all get closer to it. As happens elsewhere in the city, introducing a bike lane will create a buffer and help calm traffic and bring Center Square a little closer to being cleaner and greener. Thank you. – Michael McGettigan"

"Everyone should be able to safely navigate the literal center of Philadelphia."

-Ryan B. 3 weeks ago

"CM Young, without better bike lanes around City Hall, it is only a matter of time before a bicyclist is severely injured or killed. Not having bike lanes that are contiguous and carefully laid out is not going to stop cyclists from using the streets around City Hall. I will remind you that according to the PA State drivers test, cyclists have the same rights to the roads as other vehicles. Please make it safe for them...and me."

-Peter F. 3 weeks ago

"CM Young, Offering a safer alternative not only reduces the amount of accidents, but also removes cars from the road. If Philadelphia is going to successfully move into the future, common sense steps like this should be taken. Thank you"

-Jillian W. 3 weeks ago

"One of the most major pedestrian cities in the U.S. and yet so far behind when it comes to bike infrastructure, protection and safety. Having a bike lane around City Hall not only protects cyclists, but prevents vehicles from ILLEGALLY parking around the building obstructing tourism."

-Courtney W. 3 weeks ago

"If they can deny putting in a bike lanr in such a high traffic area then maybe we should require those who deny the bike lane to then ride a bike around city hall unprotected and see how it feels for the residents of philadelphia. As somebody who has been run off the road dozens of times in this section of this city alone. In addition to the city hall employees who continue to park in the bike lane in the area. The safety of the residents needs to be taken into account a little more than it does at this time. And not just when it's somebody important not just when it's a doctor not just when it's someone on the council. Every single life. Now."

-Andrew M. 3 weeks ago

"I ride the market street bike lanes every day home from work and it's abrupt end and need to traverse four lanes of traffic is a poor design and extremely dangerous for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. Continuing a bike lane south on 15th for as long as possible would be the safest design as it is already noted as a bikeway and is a major thorough for bike traffic heading south."

-Neil Y. 3 weeks ago

"I would love to bike around city hall safely."

-Elliu H. 3 weeks ago

"I would love a protected bike lane at city hall! I frequently go from market east to up the parkway and vice versa!"

"The roads that circle City Hall are hostile to pedestrians and bicycles alike. Despite the high volume of people not in cars, vehicular circulation is the main priority. It's difficult to cross the street at the actual designated crossings and other locations where there should be a crossing, there is not. The core of Philadelphia should not have what is essentially a highway running through it. A bike lane around City Hall would be a step in the right direction toward traffic calming, pedestrian and cyclist prioritization, and overall safety and quality of life improvements."

"Help make Philadelphia a safe biking city for all."

-Genny B. 3 weeks ago

"My friends last night were debating on how to get home: SEPTA, rideshare, etc. I proposed that they take bicycles and all of them said that they were too afraid to ride in the streets of Philadelphia on a bike. This needs to change. We are an internationally-reknown city loved for its walkability. Let's stop being car-centric and start being people-centric. A bike loop around City Hall - a signature spot for tourists and citizens alike - is a positive step in that direction."

-Edward L. 3 weeks ago

"Yes to more modes of travel, improved air quality and public health, and a vibrant Center City!"

-L B. 3 weeks ago

"This is both necessary and would be AMAZING!!"

"More bike lanes = more safety and less pollution."

-Ryan J. 3 weeks ago

"I used to bike around City Hall every day to get to/from work at the DA’s office. It is absurdly dangerous for everyone involved— pedestrians trying to cross, cyclists, even drivers! I have witnessed several crashes. A bike lane would be a great way to prioritize safety and connection at the heart of our city."

-Eleanor C. 3 weeks ago

"Build the bike lane! Makes the city safer for all."

-Leah S. 3 weeks ago

"I am 72 year old who still commutes by bike in the City. Philly needs more protected bike lanes, and one around City Hall is a great idea. Think of the access it provides to out-of-towners and locals alike."

-Maron F. 3 weeks ago

"I mean come on this is an easy win. Just complete the bike lane and make it go in a circle."

-Corey A. 3 weeks ago

"I travel through here almost every day on my work commute and I can say from experience we definitely need this!"

-Dan W. 3 weeks ago

"I’ve cut back on my biking around the city because it’s felt increasingly more dangerous. In areas without bike lanes I am regularly yelled at—or even driven off the road—by drivers for (lawfully) sharing lanes. Bike lanes are a must for improving traffic safety in the city!"

-Mary H. 3 weeks ago

"I ride around city hall everyday to get to work and to get home. Its often very challenging to merge into the lane with drivers who do not respect cyclists presence. City Hall disconnects cyclists from our most important civic center, public space, and other bicycle infrastructure. Please consider adding bike lanes to improve safety for cycling commuters and improving safety around city hall. This will show visitors a world class philly."

-Alexa R. 3 weeks ago

"Let's use City Hall as our showcase to show how Philadelphia is committed to ~actually~ becoming cleaner, greener, safer, and a better place to live by improving bike and pedestrian safety at one the busiest spots in the City."

-Jerrett J. 3 weeks ago

"I used to bike every day to work from West Philly to 8th & Market. I would bike mostly down Market St, and getting around City Hall was particularly dicey. I never found a great way to do it. There's a little shoulder you can ride in, but then it disappears. You're forced into the car lanes, which does not feel safe. It also does not make drivers too happy if they have to slow down for you. A bike lane around City Hall would help a lot!"

-Andrew E. 3 weeks ago

"It's long overdue that the city of Philadelphia have more and safer bike lanes. Trying to ride a bike anywhere near City Hall currently feels like playing a real-life version of the old arcade game Frogger. Nobody should have to go to the hospital or worse because they were partaking in the civic process. Please, let's get this bike lane done."

-Keith E. 3 weeks ago

"Navigating the lanes around Penn Square, Dilworth Park, and City Hall is stressful as a pedestrian, cyclist, or driver! Planned, delineated, and hopefully PROTECTED where possible bike lanes will provide connectivity with our great lanes on Market Street and the rest of our improving network of cycling infrastructure. As the centerpiece of our city, City Hall deserves to shine as part of that network!"

-Katie M. 3 weeks ago

"The current options for bikers in this area are extremely unsafe. Please make some space for us."

-Conor C. 3 weeks ago

"I have to commute by bike through the city every day. It's a joke how dangerous it is."

-Kurt D. 3 weeks ago

"The current structure of the bike lanes is very dangerous because all of a sudden the bike lane on the west and south side just disappears and then your in the mess of cars trying to change lanes coming on /off south broad, trying to turn down filbert, or then trying to pull into the hotels on the east side."

-Sean S. 3 weeks ago

"Please help keep us cyclists safe!"

-Marcella M. 3 weeks ago

"I've been riding a bicycle in Philadelphia for 15 years, nearly every day. City Hall is one of the most dangerous places to bike. And it's at the very center of the city. It should be the safest. Please improve the bike lane to save lives of cyclists and pedestrians."

"I and many other cyclists navigate around city hall on daily basis to get to work. The quantity of cars and traffic lanes makes this a harrowing journey on many days. As a key intersection between multiple neighborhoods in Philadelphia (including multiple protected bike lanes) and the heart of Center City, this critical intersection deserves a dedicated and fully-connected bikelane to complete the circuit and protect cyclists' lives on the city's doorstep."

-Amy L. 3 weeks ago

"Please please please!"

-Allison S. 3 weeks ago

"The area around City Hall is a huge barrier to connecting bike lanes. Just today I was riding trying to get from 13th Street to Market to the Parkway, and without safe infrastructure around City Hall it makes it so hard to connect the biking infrastructure we have. City Hall is beautiful, and shouldn't feel like you have to navigate a deadly 4-lane road just to access it or just to bike through it! Thank you!"

-Sage L. 3 weeks ago

"Please build this bike line! The whole area needs to be more pedestrian and bike friendly. The traffic there is loud and atrocious. Our city hall is mesmerizing but surrounded by a moat of honking SUVs."

-Dru F. 3 weeks ago

"I think this would improve the Market st bike lane. Market St in old city just got Philly’s first curb-protected bike and I believe they plan to extend it further to city hall. This proposal around city hall would help connect either side of market"

"It would be great if we had a safe way to ride around City Hall."

"The city could use more bike lanes. It would also help make the streets around city hall less of a racetrack."

-Jake C. 3 weeks ago

"I live in the suburbs, but I like to visit the city. I would do it more often if I had transit and bike options, since I hate driving in the city. I want to go to the city more often to eat good food and patronize restaurants."

-Kelli L. 3 weeks ago

"This is a citizen safety issue."

-Teresa P. 3 weeks ago

"I would love this as a driver and as a cyclist. That whole area is so chaotic with how the lanes influence car behavior, and needs to be addressed. Adding bike lanes would be an opportunity to make that snarled up area make more sense . Traffic might still be slow right there but it would be safer."

-Deborah R. 3 weeks ago

"The loop around city hall is awful for everyone, cars, tourists, bikes, peds, overall a terrible environment. Getting some much needed bike lanes here would be a first step and help a lot, it would also help connected west market with east market that needs all the help it can get."

-Nicholas A. 3 weeks ago

"This would make the roads safer for cyclists and hopefully better for drivers too! If people felt safer biking that might take cars off the road meaning less traffic for those that need to or prefer to drive! Let’s do this! "I bike commute 5 days a week, I hope my life, and the life of every cyclist in this city matters enough to you to make this positive change for our city ."

-Billy B. 3 weeks, 1 day ago

"Lots of good practical reasons for a City Hall Bike Lane, but remember this one too: People on bikes are organized, activated, and we vote every year. Why do you think Squilla is untouchable? Introduce bike legislation and win reelection!"

-Chris H. 3 weeks, 1 day ago

"I bike east of City Hall every week on the way to work, and my number one area of concern is where the bike lane abruptly ends on the SW corner of Dilworth. Jumping the curb is dangerous for pedestrians and those exiting the southern City Hall entrance, and the alternative is unprotected walls of traffic around the centerpiece of our city. Spare some asphalt to make a safe, protected bike lane for residents and tourists alike!"

-Andrew K. 3 weeks, 1 day ago

-Josh B. 3 weeks, 1 day ago

-Isadora M. 3 weeks, 1 day ago

"Biking in Center City needs to be safer. Full stop. Philly bike riders are under constant threat from reckless drivers and bicycle infrastructure is seriously lacking. Even the infrastructure in place is being abused by careless drivers and delivery vehicles. Philly needs to do so much better."

There will also be a ton of downstream benefits to building it here, including less traffic congestion by encouraging people who are able to to get out of their cars. When the world comes to Philly in 2026, they will see a world-class, green and safe city with your leadership and forward-thinking!"

-Victor A. 3 weeks, 1 day ago

"City Hall and Central Square are at the crossroads of our city, and making the space accessible to bikes would show Philadelphia cares both symbolically and practically about being clean and green. There are way too many traffic lanes around City Hall as it is, making crossings unacceptably long. Bike Lanes would also help alleviate that."

-Alexander R. 3 weeks, 1 day ago

Pave the way for Vision Zero, starting with city hall!"

-shelby k. 3 weeks, 1 day ago

-Greg P. 3 weeks, 1 day ago

"The area around City Hall is supposed to be the jewel of Philadelphia's public spaces and enable civic engagement for all. Instead, in its current form, it serves as a literal and metaphorical barrier keeping anyone not in a motor vehicle away from public life and our city government. Installing a complete, safe bike lane would improve connections between the area's bike infrastructure and help calm traffic to make this area safer for both cyclists and pedestrians!"

-Andrew P. 3 weeks, 1 day ago

"I ride through this street nearly every day and when I leave the safety of the bike lane it’s a complete free for all. It’s an untenable situation to force cyclists to either make a detour onto 15th St, or risk life and limb across the many lanes of Penn Square"
