Make 12th Street Safer for Everyone!

12th Street is being repaved from Spring Garden to Vine Street this year. Tell the Streets Department you support a Complete Street design on 12th Street!

A Complete Street design includes:

  1. New crosswalks and stop signs at Buttonwood, Noble, and Wood St intersections
  2. Replacing the east travel lane with a bike lane
  3. New loading zones at Buttonwood and Wood St intersections
  4. A new right turn lane at the Callowhill intersection

12th Street Complete Street improvements would:

  • Slow down traffic on 12th Street increasing safety for people walking, biking, driving
  • Reduce crossing distances for people walking and in wheelchairs.
  • Make it safer for families to access community amenities like the Rail Park
  • Provide a buffer from noisy car traffic for people on sidewalks.
  • Serve as an important extension of the 12th Street bike lane
  • Decrease congestion at the 12th and Callowhill Street intersections

The best time to implement these changes is during the repaving process. We need your signature and input to make this happen.

"Complete streets designed to move people are proven to be safer and more productive. That means protected bike lanes need to be incorporated into the design. When we build better infrastructure that prioritizes moving people over just cars, we create a safer more efficient street for all users."

-Daniel S. 3 weeks, 3 days ago

"such a shame that 12th street has been in shambles for so long, making the nearby rail park less desirable to visit! it’s currently a hazard to all who use that road! i’m in full support of this petition!"

"Please make a protected bike lane along 12th! Go visit the street segment and ride a bike along it between Temple and Center City to experience what we experience trying to get to work/home safely."

-Davis S. 3 weeks, 3 days ago

"Please make 12th St safer for all road users by adding a bike lane! I would definitely take this street if it were safer -- I don't know, because it doesn't feel safe to ride on."

-Stefan Z. 3 weeks, 3 days ago

"I regularly bike this route, as it stands it is one of the more dangerous roads in the city for absolutely no reason. It doesn't get the amount of traffic to justify it being two lanes. Like so many roads here, it should be reduced to one lane, better sidewalks, and a separated bike lane. This not only makes the road safer for cyclists, but ALL road users, including drivers!"

-Chris D. 3 weeks, 4 days ago

"Critics say there's already 10th and 15th but they stop at Spring Garden; continuing them would require removing parking. 12th St already has a bike lane in the same layout as the proposal all the way to Girard, plus a smaller bike lane from there to Cecil B. Moore Av. With that knowledge, extending the bike lane south becomes an obvious step."

-Matthew R. 3 weeks, 4 days ago

"PLEASE add a bike lane here. Right now there is no safe way for cyclists to go south through Center City. Every time I need to do that I end up dodging in and out of the reckless cars and across the trolley tracks until I can get off 12th. This is long overdue!"

-Julian B. 3 weeks, 4 days ago

"A bike lane on 12th street would be a boon for all users of the street; it would make biking easier, and would improve safety for all road users. I fully support it!"

-Alexander R. 3 weeks, 4 days ago

"Would be very helpful for commuting within Center City!"

-Kyle M. 3 weeks, 4 days ago

"All users of public roads deserve to be safe."

-Sharmarke A. 3 weeks, 4 days ago

"This would make a huge difference! Not enough N/S bike lanes."

-Olivia F. 3 weeks, 4 days ago

"Bike lanes are the gemstones of any evolving modern city. If Philadelphia wants to be walkable, be bike friendly and have foot traffic adorning its streets, then adding bike lanes on its major streets is a no brainer!"

-ERIC K. 3 weeks, 4 days ago

"As a cyclist in Philadelphia, the ability to get around the city safely is important to me. When I can ride my bike safely, I don’t drive, improving traffic for everyone else."

-John O. 3 weeks, 4 days ago

"12th St badly needs to be rebuilt for safety. The abandoned trolley tracks and construction damaged asphalt make it very dangerous. Adding a complete street would close a gap in the city and help reconnect Poplar to Center City"

-Shamus B. 3 weeks, 4 days ago

"The more the better !"

-Billy W. 3 weeks, 4 days ago

"This would drastically improve my life. I am nearly hit multiple times a week traversing this route without a bike lane."

-David V. 3 weeks, 4 days ago

"This area is really scary for pedestrians and bikers alike! A bike lane here would create a safe way for bikers to get into center city and help calm traffic for everyone."

-Tanya B. 3 weeks, 4 days ago

"We need to keep investing in safer streets"

-Jordan B. 3 weeks, 4 days ago

"More bike lanes!"

-Isaac R. 3 weeks, 4 days ago

"Yes to Bike Lane"

-Paul S. 3 weeks, 4 days ago

"The best street in a city is always those that accommodate multiple modes of transportation. Cars should only be an option to get around, not a requirement. This is a massive opportunity to save lives that could possibly be lost if a bike lane and other additional amenities are not installed."

-Alex M. 3 weeks, 4 days ago

"This is a great design and important for our communities"

-Sarabeth D. 3 weeks, 5 days ago

"I use 12th St regularly to get from Poplar to Chinatown. A bike lane here is a must to connect north-south and also to the future Vine Street bike lanes."

-Ben S. 3 weeks, 5 days ago

"This entire area is concerning for pedestrians, cyclists including delivery workers, and even. Biking on spring garden, ridge Avenue and 12th, I’ve been nearly hit by cars multiple times. When turning onto 12th street, cars continue to speed coming from these larger roadways. This driving behavior endangers the pedestrians, cyclists, and the businesses and delivery people passing along this corridor. With this neighborhoods rapidly changing demographics and businesses there is increasing foot traffic. We need stop signs and pedestrian cross walks, so this increasing pedestrian activity will be protected from safety hazards. Additionally, the roads in this area are often torn up and unsafe to travel on for cyclists, many of whom bike quickly to keep businesses’ delivery services intact- a service that is becoming crucial to modernized and appealing cities. Having the proposed changes to this portion of the road will slow down car traffic to keep travelers (pedestrians, cyclists including delivery people, and drivers) safer. It will also provide a portion of better quality roadways for travelers to rely on for safe road conditions. Please do what is needed to keep our city thank."

-Stan H. 4 weeks ago

-Sarah K. 4 weeks ago

-Alex C. 4 weeks, 1 day ago

-Andrew F. 4 weeks, 1 day ago

"This lane will be great as a tie in to the already planned PennDOT improvements for Race/Vine and for the Chinatown stitch project. We need a better connected set of bike lanes in the city! The current network isn't as connected as it should be to ensure the safety of cyclists!"

-Robert B. 4 weeks, 1 day ago

"I work in Callowhill and bike, walk and ride SEPTA down 12th street often. This stretch is plagued by speeding cars and reckless driving which makes it unsafe for everyone outside of vehicles. With many new apartments and residents moving into the area, now is a better time than ever to slow traffic and make this street safer for all users by adding a bike lane."

-Ryan B. 4 weeks, 1 day ago

"More bike lanes, please!"

-Ryan S. 4 weeks, 1 day ago

"I often bike on 12th to get to/from work locations."

-Jeffrey I. 4 weeks, 1 day ago

"Complete streets for everyone help make the city safer for all road users!"

-Brian E. 4 weeks, 1 day ago

"I work on 11th street; 12th is a nightmare to navigate on a bike, on foot, or by car. The AADT of this road is far too low to justify two lanes of car traffic. This would make this corridor far more hospitable to travelers regardless of mode. Please take this common sense step to save lives and improve our neighborhood!"

-Gabriel S. 4 weeks, 1 day ago

"We need more protected bike lanes and less high speed 2 lane roads. Safety should be the cities top priority."

-Adrian L. 4 weeks, 1 day ago

-Doug G. 4 weeks, 1 day ago

"This would make it safer for city employees to get to and from work as well."

-Sue P. 4 weeks, 1 day ago

"This is the perfect time to add a bike lane and cross walks on 12th street while is being repaved! Bike lanes and crosswalks are safe for everyone."

-Gloria S. 4 weeks, 1 day ago

"There needs to be a safe and calm southbound counterpart to the 13th St bike lane and traffic calming. 12th St helps people move into the city on many different types of transit: biking, scooters, walking, delivery vehicles, and buses. Adding clear delineation for bikes and cars, with well marked pedestrian crossings, will make a space that is calmer and safer for everyone."

-Bethany H. 4 weeks, 1 day ago

"This would be incredible for me, I bicycle to class at Temple and this would make my commute so much safer. Especially with the Septa cuts, this would help convince my classmates to transition to a bicycle commute!"

-Harry R. 4 weeks, 1 day ago

-Ken K. 4 weeks, 1 day ago

"Adding a bike lane would make it more likely for me to spend time in this part of the city. This area is in desperate need of safe ways to get around."

-Rachel G. 4 weeks, 1 day ago

"As an environmental and social advocate, there's nothing more important to me than making sure all our streets are accessible for and inclusive to all people. Designing a complete street means that countless people will now feel safer on the streets and more empowered to walk and commute in ways other than by personal vehicle."
