Philly Bike Action honored with congressional certificate for its work on LeCount Street

Philly Bike Action Aug. 13, 2025

Aug 13, 2025 - Pennsylvania State Representative Ben Waxman has honored Philly Bike Action with a congressional certificate recognizing the group's "exceptional leadership, courage, and solidarity in its efforts to advance safer, more equitable streets in the City of Philadelphia" following advocacy and engagement with community members to change the flow of traffic at LeCount Street.

Beginning on July 3, the intersection of South street and LeCount street became the site of a series of crashes between cars and people on bikes and scooters. In the course of two weeks, there were four crashes that sent two people to the hospital and left one of them in the ICU. Local residents soon reached out to Philly Bike Action for support.

Our volunteers quickly mobilized to bring attention to this dangerous intersection. Working with neighbors, Philly Bike Action placed traffic cones to demonstrate a model for a safer intersection and also brought attention to an existing neighborhood petition asking the City Council to reverse the direction of traffic on LeCount street.

By the end of the week, our efforts led Council President Kenyatta Johnson to announce that the resident petition to reverse the street direction would be expedited as an urgent trial starting July 18 and introduced as final legislation in September. With this win, local residents and Philly Bike Action enacted meaningful change that will save lives on Philadelphia's busiest bike lane.

Philly Bike Action is proud to garner this recognition and will continue to advocate for safe streets for all Philadelphians.

Thank you Rep. Ben Waxman!
