Lawsuit results in temporary injunction against Spruce & Pine Loading Zones

Philly Bike Action Aug. 15, 2025

The lawsuit against the bike lanes has resulted in a temporary injunction prohibiting implementation and enforcement of the loading zones on Spruce and Pine street. (CBS Philadelphia)

Unfortunately, this injunction will make our bike lanes less safe, while also denying loading areas for residents, businesses, delivery drivers, and taxis. Most motorists do not wish to put families and neighbors in harm's way by parking in the bike lane. Whenever there are no designated areas for short term parking, there are few other options.

These loading zones are overwhelmingly popular and an essential part of making our streets safer. At the open house hosted by the city last October, over 80% of 362 attendees supported a plan for:

  • No stopping anytime in the bike lanes
  • New loading zones in the parking lanes for businesses and resident loading needs
  • Concrete buffers and planters in the bike lane buffer

City Council can easily resolve this matter. We are calling on them to pass legislation to explicitly authorize the Streets Department to install loading zones where necessary. Our streets are a public space and their use should not be dictated by a small minority of wealthy individuals who have resources to sue the City into eternity.
