Sinkhole has closed Schuylkill River Trail for...

Update 12/24/2025 (Day 64): The Inquirer reports that repairs have been made and the previously closed Center City section of the Schuylkill River Trail has re-opened. [5] Thank you to everyone who helped raise awareness of this issue!

There is still more to do to ensure the City has clear plans—and dedicated funding—in place so that future incidents can be repaired as quickly as possible without compromising safety.

Used by thousands of runners, cyclists and other trail users each week, the Center City section of the Schuylkill River Trail (SRT) has been closed since October 21, 2025 after a sinkhole opened in the trail surface near the bridges between Race Street and JFK Boulevard.

Trail partners have reported that “the Schuylkill River Trail between Race Street and JFK Boulevard is closed until further notice for emergency repairs,” with a large sinkhole making the path unsafe for the public while crews stabilize the area and plan repairs. [1], [2]

Coverage of the incident describes the hole as roughly a 10-foot-long, 8-foot-deep sinkhole in the trail, which has forced officials to keep this busy Center City segment closed while the damage is investigated and repaired. [3]

There is currently no announced reopening date.
